improvement, together, and a room with a view
posted by soe 1:14 am

When you don’t leave the house for two days, Thursday comes around a lot faster than expected. Here are three beautiful things from my week:

1. Feeling well enough after two days home (and a Monday I should have taken as a sick day) to head back to the office.

2. My Washington Carver, a chocolate and peanut butter milk shake from Tryst, is luxuriously cold (and tasty) to my sore throat.

3. My boss has pushed and prodded and I am given an office — with a window. It’s my first above-ground window (complete with sunlight!) in more than seven years.

How about you? What’s been beautiful around you this week?

earth day resolution
posted by soe 11:41 pm

Two years ago Rudi and I switched to eco-friendly toilet paper.

Last year we made the move to bring our own bags to the store (and were reinforced in January when D.C. began to charge you an extra fee per disposable bag at the store).

This year I’m going to make the long-overdue effort to stop using disposable cups. I own several travel mugs and a number of places we frequent offer ceramic mugs for sit-down service. I need to make better use of those options and not accept as many throw-away cups as I do.

Did you make any green resolutions today, the 40th celebration of Earth Day?

it’s good to have goals
posted by soe 11:57 pm

I am reminded that the Maryland Sheep & Wool Festival is a mere ten days away and I have goals to accomplish by then.

Last year I bought this:

The Goods

That would be two skeins of sock yarn, two skeins of yarn for a sweater, and a skein of worsted weight yarn. All but the last are in projects currently underway.

By the time I head to the festival, I would be very excited if both pairs of socks were finished (both are currently stalled in mid-second sock blahs), the green Malabrigo had been cast on, and if I had resumed my summer-weight sweater that I failed to pursue past the first front panel back in February.

Then I can head to the festival with a clear conscience.

I mean, ideally it would be great if all four projects were complete, but let’s not set ourselves up for failure at the outset, shall we?

ugh!

I hab a code in mah node.

::cough::

Ahem…

Luckily, it’s not in my fingers.

Unfortunately, because we’re on a huge deadline for work, I had to go into the office today, which I did. And the work got done, although it took way longer to do than I expected, and it left my poor boss feeling very bad for me when she hopped online later at night to find me still toiling at the office.

But I made it home in time to pick up some chicken soup from Zorba’s (my answer to homemade chicken soup is to buy it from the local Greek restaurant), since Rudi had eaten at a meeting, before Castle came on.

And unless I feel supremely better tomorrow, after my 8 a.m. conference call with India, I’m planning to head back to bed and stay home from work.

Because our beta delivery is Friday and I need to be back to fighting shape by then.

Is it May yet?

the ’80s
posted by soe 2:01 am

I’ve been thinking recently — probably as a result of singing along with a lot a cappella music recently — that I may need to put together a mix cd/playlist of fun ’80s tunes.

I’m leaning toward the ones that get you up and dancing around the living room — Madonna’s “Borderline” and Cindy Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” spring to mind — for an initial compilation. But if I come up with a sufficient number of ballads — the ’80s did have a great selection of power ballads, after all — I’m not above making a second set of songs.

Anyone have any favorites they think I should include?
