It’s early, early in the morning or late, late at night depending on your perspective and the precipitation has been coming down for the last 12 hours, alternating as quickly as my manic moods between snow, sleet, and freezing rain.

We will be home for the third straight day as offices continue to be closed. Our region is predicted to get anywhere from 6 to 20 inches, but who knows if that will happen. My friend Susan and I are going to meet up in the afternoon. I may head to my knitting group if a) the venue where we meet is open and b) anyone else is going. I’m definitely going to take a shower. It’ll be a big day here at the Burrow…

Today after my early conference call, I read the novel that is due back to the library this week and then dozed on the couch. I put on enough clothing to go out and feed the birds. I ripped out and restarted a heart-bedecked sock that will not be done in time for Valentine’s Day (at least not this year’s). I did laundry. Rudi and I cooked a family favorite for dinner for the first time and then plopped ourselves down for the Marx Brothers. We concluded the night with the final batch of chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven from dough we made four days ago. We’re already talking about what dessert to make next, which might suggest to you the levels we’ve reached here…

Another snowball fight has been scheduled for 2 p.m. in Dupont Circle. Right now, they’d better hope for a change to snow because slush/sleetballs are fun for no one. (Although, as I type this final paragraph, what had looked like freezing rain changed to golf ball-sized snow chunks falling from the sky…)

I feel like a kid who’s gorged on sweets for a week. Some veg is definitely needed to balance things back out…

upcoming storm follow-up
posted by soe 12:59 am

We are currently accepting overblown names for the impending winter storm. Snowpocalypse and Snowmageddon have already come and gone for this season and have served us well. Please leave your creative suggestions in the comments.

where do i live exactly?!?!
posted by soe 11:26 pm

Tomorrow’s and Wednesday’s forecast holds a second blizzard for D.C. with the meteorologists predicting another 10-20 inches and high winds.

I know I was just writing about how I missed living in New England, but I would like to reiterate for capricious gods that the part I was homesick for was the people, not the weather. (Although I may not have reached snow fatigue quite yet, digging my car out today just so it can get plowed in again tomorrow may move me in that direction.)

Suffice it to say, no work again tomorrow, at least after the 8 a.m. conference call I have with India. (Yes, the whole country…)

Luckily, we still have videos. And we picked up another half gallon of milk at the local shop this evening. Think the library will have some leniency about due dates for my books?

snowmageddon: the storm ends
posted by soe 3:40 am

Snowmageddon ’10 finished dumping white fluff on us just over 24 hours after the first flakes began sticking to the roads. As John, Rudi, and I left Teaism at 5 this afternoon, blue skies were showing just in time to allow for a pink sunset over snow-laden trees.

I awoke at my normal time this morning, looked out the window at the downpour of snow and the high piles I could see from our below-ground vantage point, and decided that it seemed like a good morning to sleep in. Apparently what that really meant was a good morning to sleep through, as I didn’t get up until after noon.

We ventured out to join our friend John at a flash mob snowball fight at Dupont Circle, where we dallied in the median for an hour or two before deciding that it was cooling off, that we were tired of kicking up snow with our boots to throw, and that a hot beverage sounded awfully appealing.

Rudi and I spent the evening at home, foregoing a planned trip to the Hill for a party (sorry, Pat and Heidi) in favor of grilled cheese and tomato soup in front of a movie. We finished up the night with some post-SNL cookie baking.

All in all, a pleasant way to pass a Saturday.

(D.C. is dealing with the snow quite well, I thought, avoiding many of the histrionics of the neighboring states. The plows have come through the snow routes near our house regularly and there is hope of resuming bus service on Monday morning. Our farmers’ market has been cancelled for tomorrow morning, but I think that’s more due to the farmers being unable to leave their own areas and reach us safely than our ability to receive them with open and shoveled arms. Luckily, I bought extra greens last week, so we should be okay.)

Photos tomorrow. Really this time…
