is it a bad sign…?
posted by soe 12:18 am

Is it a bad sign when, on the very day you compose the housecleaning schedule that will allow you to have a party in three weeks without spending the hours leading up to it in tears, you disregard nearly every task scheduled for that day?

But… I do have an apple crisp in the oven, so it’s not all bad…

my d.c.: sweets in the streets
posted by soe 12:59 am

While out and about during lunch on Tuesday, I decided to bypass the closer soup option for one a bit further afield with more choices. Crowds of people clad in gloomy hues hurried under dark umbrellas to their destinations through the grey November drizzle.

Ahead, though, color drew my eye. A hot pink truck. What a nice change from the monotony! I walked closer to see what business was trying to brighten up the region.

Curbside CupcakesYeah, okay… So that doesn’t really tell you much, does it?

What my camera phone failed to capture well is that the side of the truck says, “Curbside Cupcakes.”

I admit it: I was intrigued. Was it a new bakery delivering goods downtown? As I got closer, I could see through the windshield what looked like an awning on the side of the truck. Could it be…?

Had the cupcake version of the ice cream man finally been invented?!

It had!

Kristi and Sam of Curbside Cupcakes

Meet Kristi and Sam, the co-proprietors of a new roving cupcake enterprise, Curbside Cupcakes. Tuesday was their second day in business.

They will be driving around D.C. on weekdays to bring fairy cake goodness to a different neighborhood each day. They’ll also take advance orders and deliver in bulk should you be in need of cupcakes for an office function or want to send a fun birthday present to a friend.

It seems that they’ll have a half dozen flavors or so each day. On Tuesday, they first tried to tempt me with red velvet, but then I explained that, as a New Englander, it wasn’t a flavor that appealed as much as some of their others. At that revelation, Kristi suggested I try the chocolate cupcake with cream cheese frosting. She said that she normally wasn’t a huge fan of chocolate cake, but that this one was especially good.

I complimented the frosting right away, but Kristi urged me to sample the cake itself. I pulled back the wrapper and took a bite. Mini chocolate chips hidden in the cake helped to create a moist and flavorful base. Delicious!

If you work in D.C., keep an eye out for Sam and Kristi’s pink van to sample an excellent addition to the District’s cupcake options. Or follow their Twitter feed or Facebook page to get updates on varieties and daily locations.

Coming across Curbside Cupcakes and their tasty wares can only brighten your day!

musical, legwear, and the prom
posted by soe 11:34 pm

It’s 1:30 a.m. and I just finished work for the day. (A last minute emergency has our whole project working crazy hours today or tomorrow…) As such, please forgive my potentially terse comments. I swear it’s all beautiful. But so is my bed, where I desperately would like to go lay my head.

Three beautiful things from the past week:

1. Rudi whistling in the shower.

2. New cheery (salmon, bright blue with pink sparkly flowers, seafoam, and pink argyle) kneesocks to wear with my (blue polka dot) galoshes. Rainy days are just so cheery in my world, and everyone seems to agree, since they almost universally comment on one or t’other.

3. The book I just finished included girls getting ready for a prom-themed dance. I am transported back to high school — junior year when, after I was rejected (kindly) by the guy I asked, Karen went to the movies with me and senior year when Grey Kitten and I danced the night away. Such good memories of such good friends.

the jag
posted by soe 2:41 am

Do you ever get into jags with your hobbies? Periods where you just spend hours and hours doing the same thing?

I’ve been on a reading kick recently and have been finishing books left and right. I get home from work and head to the bedroom to curl up with my latest novel. It’s not a bad thing (although Rudi might disagree), but it’s just odd.

Sometimes, I feel that way about knitting, too. I can feel a knitting jag off in the wings, waiting its turn. Right now, it’s just manifesting itself in a strong desire to wind yarn for upcoming projects, but I know that one day soon it’s going to elbow its way to the front and demand I pick up the needles and start casting things on.

How about you? Do you have obsessive relationships with your hobbies, too?

sunday tweed
posted by soe 1:28 am

On Sunday, Rudi, Michael, Julia, and I are going to take part in the first ever D.C.-based Tweed Ride. The goal of the ride is to get dressed up in some tweedy fashion (or something equally fabu), hop on your bike, and ride leisurely across town for post-ride drinks.

Sponsored by the local social organization Dandies and Quaintrelles (whose purpose is to “indulge ourselves in leisurely retroforward moments filled with exceptional entertainment and delights of the mind”), it seems like a fun way to spend an afternoon.

Except, of course, that it requires a costume. A get-up. An outfit. And my wardrobe doesn’t tend toward tweed. If you asked me to dress up like Rainbow Brite, I could oblige. Punky Brewster, check. But fashionable 1920s or ’40s gear? I got nothing. (Elmira Gulch, though, I might be able to pull off…) Rudi and I postponed a trip to Goodwill last weekend to lounge in the sun, which means a Saturday trip is now mandatory.

Julia and I have IM’ed about it on several occasions — we’d like to look cute but not have to worry about hems caught in chains. Julia suggested knickers, but where do you find such things in 2009? And when you can’t sew?

I do have a cloche… I could wear that, but what happens if I hit a patch of wet leaves and crash? Will I regret not wearing my trusty helmet? And what if it’s breezy? Will my cute hat blow away?

Clothing makes me crazy, folks…

Will I find something to wear? Can you think of anything? Help!

don’t forget to vote
posted by soe 2:27 am

Have you voted for your favorite Sesame Street clip from the 1970s yet?

Just to warn you: it’s hard to pick! “Rubber Duckie Song…” “ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYZ” from Big Bird…. Kermit’s “It’s Not Easy Bein’ Green…” Ladybug Picnic… The Yip-Yip martians discovering the radio… Gover’s Near and Far…

What would you pick? Were there 1970s clips you think they should have included?

Personally, I loved the Bert and Ernie drawing of a cow sketch…
