upcoming wedding

We’re ten days away from the wedding in California.

Two problems:

a) I don’t have a present yet. Yes, I know. I can buy off the registry if need be. It’s just so … unoriginal. And from one Wesleyan grad to another, it does seem that the gift almost begs to be original. Any ideas?

b) I have to pick a dress. I have four choices:

  1. Red satin with plunging neckline, worn to Caroline’s and Sam’s weddings.
  2. Pink silk sheath, worn to Jason’s and Wendy’s weddings.
  3. Pink flowered linen party dress.
  4. White linen full-skirted party dress.

I just modeled them for Rudi, who votes for one of the two linen dresses. It’s an outdoor Saturday night wedding in Southern California. Is linen too informal? I know we’ve abandoned the taboo on wearing black to weddings; how do we feel about guests wearing white?

I’ve got a week and would love some feedback.

You know I’ve avoided weddings and graduations so I’m not sure about the protocol. I wish I could offer some helpful advice but sadly I can’t. I can however wish you a good time!

I think linen is fine, but, most important, you have to be comfortable in whatever you wear.

I’m not familiar with the linen dresses, but am with the other two. For what it’s worth, and as much as I like the red one, I think it’s too dark for Southern CA. So, eliminate the red and pick one of the other three. Is there a satisfying sigh in putting one of them on? If so, go with that one.

Wearing white is potentially risky and embarassing. You don’t want to outshine or be mistaken for the bride. I found this.

Southern California is far less formal than CT or DC. Of course, it’s entirely up to the couple what sort of dress code they decide to enforce. If they didn’t specify anything, you can get away with more casual dress than would be appropriate at formal occasions in other parts of the US.
