living a life so i have something to blog about
posted by soe 2:50 am

Having a new president, many of whose ideas I actually agree with: Priceless

Living in the city in which he’s inaugurated: Priceless

Spending the four-day inaugural weekend with the friends I made during the Howard Dean political campaign four years ago, who are my family away from family: Utterly priceless

I’ll be back tomorrow or the day after with photos and commentary.

There’s something about the title of this post that’s been bugging me since I read it. It took me a while to figure it out and put it into words.

To me, the title and post imply that without lots of social activities you would have nothing to blog about. I don’t think that’s true. I think you could huddle all day in your home, like a modern-day Emily Dickinson, and still find things to tell us about.

That’s because the best posts are the ones where you talk about things that you feel strongly about—I’m in Love (the library), One Last Night (your Christmas tree), The Price of a Happy Ending (violence in movies)—just to name the most recent ones. While inspired by activities (going to the library, taking down the Christmas tree, and going to the movies), the activities weren’t grand or extraordinary in any way. It’s just everyday stuff. The important thing is that you spent the time and the words to tell us why it mattered. You told us about you.

I’m not suggesting that you give up your social activities. Far from it. They’re important, too. They’re just not, IMHO, what gives you something to blog about.

Kare, you’re right. Those are the posts I love the most, but they’re also the ones that rise unbidden from my fingertips in the late wee hours of the morning.

The rest, the work part of blogging, have to come from somewhere. Of course, once I put up a post like this, I have a terrible tendency not to write a follow-up offering the lovely details. (Which is too bad, because when I want to use this site like an actual diary to look back at things, it would be helpful if I’d recorded something other than DETAILS TK.)
