world series weekending

While my nails remain scantily clad in their chipped September polish, I still haven’t come up with a Halloween costume idea I like, and I bought gingerbread from a bake sale instead of doing my own baking, I got through quite a bit of my to-do list for the weekend.
Rudi had yesterday off, so after a relaxed start to the day, we did a little cleaning and a little laundry, and then rode across town on a 13-mile Coffeeneuring bike ride to the Lamond-Riggs neighborhood, where we got to check out a new-to-us library and coffee shop. (More on that to come in a future post…)
This morning, I hit the farmers market for apple cider and bought the first quince of the season. I moseyed up to the local park in the afternoon for their Halloween festival (and the aforementioned bake sale) and then rode down to the waterfront to check out the Crafty Bastards craft fair (where I failed to procure the tea I wanted or any Christmas presents, but where I did buy Christmas cards, so I should be set on that front). I treated myself to fried dough sticks from a food truck and the best chai I’ve had in D.C. from a coffeehouse/restaurant and walked most of the way back across town.
I did not finish any knitting projects, but I’m way closer with the Halloween socks, which I knit while watching World Series baseball (but not on Friday, because the Sox kept screwing up every time Rudi turned on the game) and reading Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets (the illustrated version, which is heavy enough to stay open on its own if I prop it on the sofa bolster).
How was your weekend?

I need for there to be a weekend with fewer fun things to do in it. I want a day to hang around the house and read and knit (and clean, but that’s less of a want and more of a need; our annual party is in five weeks).
That said, in addition to the reading, knitting, and cleaning, here’s what else the weekend holds:
- Check out Crafty Bastards.
- Take at least one Coffeeneuring ride to a library and cafe with Rudi.
- Stop in on the annual Halloween party and festival at our local park.
- Procure cider at the farmers market.
- Bake.
- Buy paper towels and cat litter.
- Send some mail.
- Do laundry. (God, I hope we don’t need quarters again already…
- Paint my nails Halloween colors.
- Contemplate needs for Halloween costumes and decorations.
How about you? What’s on tap for your weekend?

I returned home from Connecticut midday on Saturday after spending one final morning with my folks. After a joyful reunification with the cats in which Jeremiah was quite convinced he could lick all that other animal smell off my hand, I biked up to the Cleveland Park neighborhood to visit their library and get a snack. Rudi joined me after he was done with work and since the movie theater up there wasn’t playing anything we wanted to see, we bought some pizza dough from the Italian shop up there and came home to spend the evening in, reading and knitting (I finished two books and zero knitting projects) and watching Netflix.
Today, I hit the farmers market (where the quince are starting to come in), ran by the garden to pick the tomatoes because of tonight’s frost warning (I suspect I’ll have over-reacted, but after you’ve nursed plants along all summer, it’s painful to lose your crop because you bet wrong on Mother Nature), and then met up with Sarah, who drove us out to Virginia for an afternoon of apple picking and cider doughnut acquisition. Rudi made a tasty supper of squash tajine and we ate what I’m guessing will be our final smoothie bowl (peach ginger) from the farmers market this season to wrap up the weekend.

This weekend, I’ve got quite a few plans:
- Spend one more morning with my folks (which does necessitate getting this post finished soon so I can get the packing out of the way).
- Fly home.
- Visit the library.
- Get to the farmers market. (It’s been two weeks. I’m excited to see what’s new!)
- Take part in Dewey’s 24-Hour Readathon. (I will not be reading 24 hours. But I would like to finish a couple of the books I have on the go and that seems perfectly accomplishable. Also, it’s not too late to sign up if you have some time you can read on Saturday.)
- Do a Coffeeneuring ride. (Hot drinks! Exercise! New-to-me library branches! Also not too late to sign up if you have access to a bicycle!)
- Stop at the garden and probably pick a few tomatoes and a few peppers.
- Go apple picking with Sarah. (Our annual foray!)
- Eat cider doughnuts (from our annual foray)!
- Watch a film — maybe on dvd, maybe at the movie theater. There are several we’d like to see and my volleyball is getting in the way of seeing them with Rudi on cheap Tuesdays.
- Finish a knitting project. (Good god. This one is on here like every week…)
- Hang out with Rudi and the cats, all of whom I’ve missed tremendously this past week.
How about you? What are you hoping your weekend includes?
random thoughts from connecticut

It’s been a long day and my thoughts are unwilling to slow down. I offer some of them to you in an effort to get them out of my head and to get something down here, no matter how free-form:
My dad’s surgery went well. As of right now, they plan to send him home tomorrow, which will make him very happy.
It will also make my parents’ dog very happy. She is very much THEIR dog and has been sulking in her bed much of the day. She also suffers anxiety during rainstorms, which means we’ve snuggled together a couple of times, as I have attempted to assure her that I will not let the rain storm get her. She did enjoy the drive to the grocery store, though…
Their cats were far more blasé about my parents’ absence. I mean, they’ve noticed, but as long as I continue to feed them, they’re chill.
I have been up since 7 a.m. How do you people do that on a regular basis? I mean, it just sucks.
I did not get bit by the tick I discovered crawling on my hand after I emptied the cats’ litter box outside this morning. And I did not lose it before I could dispose of it properly. Yuck.
I discovered last night that I screwed up the centering on my shawl two repeats back. I may rip back tomorrow evening in an effort to get back on track, but I may try dropping down just those relevant stitches first, though, to see if I can get away with doing it that way. I mean, the worst that’ll happen is that I’ll have to unravel it, right? In the meantime, I brought two pairs of socks with me…
When grabbing my suitcase to pack for my trip up here, I discovered my pair of jeans had never gotten put away after my last trip. This was a happy discovery, since I had another pair of jeans that had suddenly developed a hole and I was really surprised I hadn’t noticed my good pair was wearing through. I bought a new pair, though, because fall, so now I have two pairs and have found my good belt and the pair of leggings I assumed was hiding in my closet.
I read the first hundred pages of The Librarian and the Spy this evening. It’s cute so far.
I’m enjoying the reboot of Magnum on tv. It’s nothing deep, but it’s fun.
I spent much of the later part of tonight culling emails from my inbox. I deleted more than 10,000 messages, which feels pretty good, although I’d like to get it down just to the important ones. (My apologies to those of you that just gave palpatations to…)
The animals have all gone to bed. I suppose I should follow suit, because it’s another long day tomorrow. Plus, my mother asked me to sleep in their bedroom so the dog can wake me up if she needs to go out, and I haven’t been able to turn off her bedside lamp all day and I should figure that out before I get too tired and just deal with it by unplugging it…
