fancy people on wheels, contrast, & spring weather

Fairy Village

Three beautiful things from my past week:

1. Over the weekend I saw three different people in fancy dress traveling on non-motorized wheeled vehicles — a fellow all in red (velvet hat, blazer, and white polka dotted pants) on a skateboard, a man in a kaftan and kufi on a bicycle walking his standard poodle, and a young woman in a sparkly embroidered salwar kameez and dupatta piloting her scooter down a hill near the Capitol.

2. The salmon dogwoods against a cloudy backdrop.

3. A gorgeous sunny afternoon after several days of clouds and rain.

How about you? What was beautiful in your world recently?

Redbud Flowers

When I walked out of the house this morning, the redbud on the corner was practically iridescent against the storm grey sky. I didn’t do a great job of capturing its grandness (although you can see the rest of my efforts on Flickr), but this is the best of the bunch. And here are three more beautiful things I wanted to share from my past week:

1. We flooded in the torrential rains of Sunday night, but I had thought that might be the case and had prepared by moving the things I thought likeliest to be damaged. I got up at one point to check, discovered the incursion, and moved everything else (that had been inconvenient to move if we weren’t going to get wet) and by morning merely had to dispose of sodden newspaper and launder sopping wet towels.

2. Danny texted to say his writing group’s collection of short stories was available on Amazon. There really is nothing quite like seeing one of your dearest people’s name on a book cover. (I know I’ve mentioned it before. I’ll probably mention it again. If any of you publish a book, I’ll share it, too.)

3. While I did not find a wallet last weekend, I did buy jewelry — bracelets — at the boutique that’s going out of business next month. One is fun, with Art Deco-style cats, and the other pretty, with colorful glass and pounded silver made by a couple in North Carolina, according to the store’s owner.

How about you? What’s been beautiful in your world lately?

Three beautiful things from my past week:

April Baseball

1. Tonight, a gorgeous spring evening, was my first baseball game of the year.

2. I watched Step over the weekend and it was a truly delightful documentary about a step team at an all girls’ leadership school in Baltimore. I was so caught up in the outcome, I forgot periodically it was real life, and I liked it so much I gave Rudi a play-by-play of it when he came home. If you like uplifting sports movies or empowering women’s films, I highly recommend you check this one out!

Cherry Blossom Kites

Three beautiful things from my past week:

1. We happened upon an open bakery during our drive home from Connecticut and then were pleasantly surprised to discover that it was an Asian fast food shop. Rudi had a sweet pastry with Hawaiian pizza toppings on it paired with a red bean matcha latte that he said was like nothing he’d ever drunk. I had a taro-red bean bun and a hot chocolate with salted cheese on top (whipped cream, cream cheese, and rock salt). Everything was delicious.

2. My favorite food truck seller complimented my sense of style, which was something I didn’t know I had, and asked how I developed my sense of color. I told him that I usually just describe my wardrobe as put together by a six-year-old, which his chef then said was underappreciated.

3. While they weren’t selling anything particularly exciting just yet, weekday farmers markets re-opened this week, a sure sign of spring.

Earth Hour

Three beautiful things from my past week:

1. Brave and determined teenagers insistent on not allowing others to limit or define them, but who instead move to make the world a better place.

2. Rudi was up and caught a news item alerting him to the impending sale of local Hamilton tickets, which means we’ll be spending a delightful Friday evening at the Kennedy Center in June.

3. A double-booked evening resolved itself without any intervention on my part, which allowed me to sup on pizza and doughnuts before a talk on creativity. My inner eight-year-old knew being an adult would be awesome.

First Tulips

Three beautiful things from my past week:

1. The concession stand at the movie theater where we saw Love, Simon sold packages of mini Oreos. (Oreos are mentioned over and over in both the book and the film, so I knew we’d want them.)

2. Spring has arrived!

Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk in the Snow

3. So did the snow, which remained uncertain enough in its forecast that the federal government shut down on Wednesday and had a late opening today. Unlike New England, which probably feels like it will never thaw, we only had a few inches and the accumulation has already mostly melted away. Best thing about spring snowstorms is that it melts fast!
