Oh, right. Cleaning.

Well, let’s pretend I did that today.

No? You don’t believe me? Well, you’re right.

Instead, I slept in, watched a vegetarian cooking show, bought yarn at a cool shop in Rockville, Maryland, and bought some more storage containers at Ikea.

Tonight? We’re heading to see Thank You for Smoking with Susan and Phillip as soon as we’ve eaten our pasta.

Maybe tomorrow I’ll have a tidier day.

You can’t just jump in and start cleaning. You need to map out a plan of attack. If you were a football coach, there would be chalk diagrams with Xs ad Os and arrows where they should run. Not being a football coach, and probably lacking the large chalkboard, you must do your pre-game in an alternative manner. This is neither better nor worse, just different.

Right now, while to the casual observer, it appears you are simply procrastinating, the truth is far more complicated and subtle. They might think nothing is happening, because they cannot see what is happening. But just because you can’t see something doesn’t make it less real.

This is the vision stage of cleaning. Like a professional track star envisioning herself crossing the finish line ahead of all the other runners, you are in the process of envisioning what your place will look like when it is clean.

Once you have that picture firmly in your mind, you set it onto reality – those paying close attention will hear a soft click, if the dryer isn’t running at the time. After that point, events will conspire to organize things into the version of reality outlined by your vision. It helps if volunteers show up to move things around for this process, but without them it just takes a little longer.

Now, if I put chalk diagrams down in the Burrow, I think someone might believe it was a crime scene.

I think I need less vision and more Mary Poppins at this point. I think that click you heard was her backing out the door at the sight of our mess. Honestly, I think we make the nursery look downright immaculate.
