pre-long weekend unraveling
posted by soe 1:40 am
This is The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert, which is a really most excellent modern fairy tale that I am trying my very best to pace out over several days and not read through in a single sitting, but it’s really hard because it’s SOOOO good. Plus, look at that cover! (The end papers match, with a black background, silver flowers, and golden branches.) It’s designed by Jim Tierney, who has designed a lot of other cool covers, including Frogkisser!
I’m also still reading Killers of the Flower Moon, which is very good, despite my slow read of it; Little Fires Everywhere, which is a stressful slow burn (pun intended); Norse Mythology, which is a fun dishwashing listen and for which it is virtually impossible not to imagine the Marvel movie actors as Neil Gaiman reads about the gods’ adventures (although Lady Sif is way off from her actress); and Solo, which is interesting because I don’t fully know where it’s going to end up.
I suspect all five of these will be done by the end of the long weekend. And then on to new literary adventures!
On the needles I’m working on sock #2 of my In the Wildwood socks, which might also wrap up this weekend, depending on how much sitting time I get. I’m enjoying them, which means another stripey pair is likely to follow.

summer book bingo
posted by soe 1:19 am
I’ve decided I’m going to take part in Mere et Filles’ Summer Book Bingo again. Take part might be a generous turn of phrase, since I use my card’s categories to pick some things to read between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but not everything and I don’t really worry about finishing the whole card or even a row.
That’s just how I roll around here.
Anyway, here is my card for the summer, and I look forward to filling in some of those categories starting this weekend.
Do you have summer reading plans yet?

bout of books 22 wrap-up
posted by soe 1:44 am

Bout of Books wrapped up tonight. I didn’t quite meet all my goals, and I squeaked in a third finish just before the wire.
I had six goals for the past week. Let’s see how I did:
Take part in at least two challenges and at least one of the Twitter chats.
Yes! I missed the first chat, but woke up from my post-wedding nap to catch the one Saturday morning. And I managed two challenges, although I thought about several others.
Visit at least one other Bout of Books participant’s blog a day.
Missed out big-time on this one. Didn’t visit a single blog this week.
Return some of my massive pile of library books to the library.
Yes! I took back almost a dozen books and dvds to the library on Saturday. Most of them I hadn’t read, but will try again later. That’s what libraries are for.
Read a little each day.
Totally! I didn’t always read on paper, but I did read every day.
Finish posting my January reviews.
Nope! Maybe this week?
Stretch goal: Finish three books.
Yes, although none of them were the books that are overdue at the library. One was A Treacherous Curse, the third in Deanna Raybourn’s Victorian lepidopterist mystery series. The second was a picture book, Brick by Brick by Charles R. Smith Jr. with illustrations by Floyd Cooper, about the slaves who helped to build the White House. The third was a fun graphic novel/comic collection, Goldie Vance by Hope Larson and Brittney Williams, I picked up on Comic Book Day. It’s set in late-1950s Florida, where biracial Goldie Vance lives at a resort with her dad where she aspires to be the in-house detective. In her spare time, she hangs out with her friends, who also work at the resort, gets into mischief with ease and out with derring-do and her keen observational skills, and crushes on the cute girl who works at the record shop.
All in all, not bad. I’ll be joining the next round of Bout of Books in August.

mid-may unraveling
posted by soe 2:14 am
This past week, I started three books: Viet Thanh Nguyen’s The Refugees, a short story collection that’s been chosen as a D.C. Reads book for everyone in the city to read; The Folded Clock, by Heidi Julavits, a diary/collection of essays relating to time; and A Treacherous Curse, the latest in the Veronica Speedwell Victorian mystery series by Deanna Raybourn.
I’m also listening to Solo, a YA verse novel by Kwame Brown with Mary Rand Hess about the son of a rock legend/hot mess who finds out a family secret, and Neil Gaiman’s Norse Mythology, which I can’t help but populate with faces from the Marvel movies.
My sock is pretty much to the toe decreases. I really thought I’d get it finished tonight, but instead I dozed off (after a fun-filled day off for Rudi’s birthday), so obviously I should go to bed instead.

early may unraveling
posted by soe 1:44 am
I’m up to the heel on my cheery In the Wildwood socks, which I should be able to put a good dent in during a meeting tomorrow. Should that go fine (with the striping), it will have been a good decision to move to these socks. If not, they will join a list of projects that I need to deal with. Keep your fingers crossed for me.
As for the reading, it’s been Killers of the Flower Moon and Little Fires Everywhere, which is now the second “literary book with surprise twist” that everyone’s been talking about that I’m pretty sure I have figured out from near the get-go. I don’t know if this comes from a background of reading mysteries or if literary writers just really aren’t that good at writing plot twists. Or maybe Celeste Ng is and I will be totally shocked that what I think has happened in the past didn’t actually happen.
I’ve also been listening to The Bear and the Nightingale, but that’s expiring tomorrow without my having finished it, so I’ll have to wait for my turn to come around again. Hopefully it won’t be terribly long, but luckily it’s YA Sync season, so I have new audiobook downloads to listen to every week for free and Norse Mythology came back around for download tonight.
Head over to As Kat Knits for more books and knitting.
