multi-modal weekend
posted by soe 1:30 am

Sunday Sunset

The highlight of this weekend was hanging out with my friend Julia. She wanted to check out the artisan pop-up booths at the new Wharf development and I was content to do that.

I biked down to Hains Point (a peninsular park that juts out into the Potomac where the Anacostia River empties into it), where there were empty bikeshare docks (as opposed to the more popular Wharf stops) and hopped aboard the new six-passenger jitney boat they run back and forth across the harbor. Obviously, if you can take a boat to your destination on a sunny summer Saturday, you should avail yourself of that option. Sadly, the ride was over in two minutes, but still…

I had a very delicious slice of blueberry lemon curd pie and a cup of tea at the hardware store/bike shop/cafe while we chatted and then Julia and I did a couple loops of the Wharf shops and restaurants and the fish market before we needed to catch the metro so she could get to her evening plans. It was a pleasant way to pass the afternoon.

The weekend also included time at the garden, the donation of more than 50 books to the Friends-of sale at my local branch library, a re-watch of the original Mamma Mia, a nap, an ice cream cone (rocky road), reading, knitting, sleeping in, the farmers market, and watching the sunset at the park with Rudi.

How was your weekend?

first august weekend plans
posted by soe 12:56 am

My solo Friday evening plan — to watch Black Panther out in a local park — was rained out, so I pivoted, ordered a ridiculous amount of Thai takeout (including a very tasty dessert), and watched an episode of Miss Fisher instead.

Tomorrow will be busy. I need to gather and then run book donations to the library, then stop at the garden, where an emergency vine-pulling work day has been called. I’ll also harvest some tomatoes and some beans while I’m there. My friend Julia and I are finally getting together in the afternoon, after our plans were cancelled due the rain two weeks ago. Depending on how ambitious I feel, I may make my way over to Solid State Books on H St., N.E., after we part ways, since they’ve moved into their permanent spot since I stopped in back in the spring. But I did just buy books last weekend, so maybe I should wait some. We’ll see. There’s also some festival taking place at Malcolm X Park tomorrow afternoon and evening that I could swing by, as well. Or maybe I’ll just come home and knit. Or go watch Mamma Mia, although Rudi would be disappointed to miss that…

Sunday I’m hoping for more low-key: Sleep in. Farmers market. And since the heat is due back, possibly reading by the pool. Maybe reading in the pool. Maybe just a long nap at home. There’s a theater event over in Arlington that involves procuring discounted tickets for their upcoming season, but it’s all the way across the river, so the odds of my feeling motivated by then are pretty slim. Rudi should be home by suppertime, so that will be nice.

Other things I should do:

  • Wash laundry.
  • Bake.
  • Paint my nails.
  • Pay bills.
  • Trade in my summer reading voucher for baseball tickets.
  • Buy cat litter.
  • Send some cards.
  • Figure out why my fountain pen isn’t working.
  • Find my coffee table.
  • Dance around the living room.

How about you? What’s on your to-do list for the weekend?

summer sensing
posted by soe 1:19 am

Here’s what happening around me:

Hearing: The a/c running. The fridge making settling noises.

Feeling: Corey purring as he lies with his full weight against my left wrist. (He thinks I have difficulty blogging without him lying on me in some way, preferably over at least one wrist and a paw or his chin on my boobs. He is not ergonomically correct.)

Smelling: Not mildew. Rudi had the day off today and he put the braided rug back down in the living room for the first time since the flood.

Seeing: Hope Never Dies, lying spread-eagle in front of me where I put it down after reading the first few chapters earlier.

Tasting: Toothpaste is the predominant taste, but there’s still a hint of the garlic from the delicious tagine Rudi made earlier.

four inches
posted by soe 3:29 am

You wouldn’t think four inches would have much significance in nature. My tomato plants grow an extra four inches and I won’t even notice after a certain point. Four inches of snow and we’d hardly blink some winters.

But four inches of rain fall on a single day and you’re inclined to notice. A storm of that significance curtails activities, particularly in a region where walking comprises a major mode of transportation. It’s not unlike a hurricane, except without the wind.

And if you have a basement, and more particularly if you live in a basement, you’re very likely to notice four inches of rain falling from the sky because eventually it’s going to move in with you.

And it has. Just like you’d accommodate an unannounced visit from a loved one, I accommodated the water’s arrival, too. But, boy, has it rearranged my weekend plans — and my living room, too.

The week’s forecast shows rain every day. Keep your fingers crossed that it’s intermittent — the ground having a chance to dry out will be the only thing that saves us from more water incursion.

solo(ish) weekend plans
posted by soe 1:18 am

Rudi is heading out of town in the morning, which means I have some time to myself this weekend. Much of it is supposed to be stormy, so I’m expecting to fill it with more inside activities than time outside. Here’s some of what I’m hoping my weekend includes:

  • I need to get over to the garden. A huge rain shower on Tuesday afternoon meant that I skipped several days of visiting, which probably means squirrels have eaten all of my semi-ripe tomatoes and the last of my lettuce has bolted.
  • I should finish recording my July reading to date in the summer reading app so I can claim this month’s summer reading prize from the library. Conveniently, I also need to visit to exchange some books.
  • Apparently, lotus flowers and water lilies are in bloom over at the aquatic garden and they’re having a festival to celebrate. I’ve never been to the aquatic garden and may feel up to battling the crowds. Maybe.
  • Sunday, my friend Julia and I are going to get together for coffee (or, in my case, tea). She said she’d like to leave her neighborhood, so I’m thinking maybe the new bookshop across town, where they supposedly have a little cafe. Or maybe a new coffeeshop I’ve heard about closer to where I live.
  • If it isn’t thunderstorming, I’d like to get to the pool sometime this weekend. The summer is going by so fast and the pool will be closed again before I know it.
  • I baked a fast cake (literally: it was only in the oven 20 minutes) on Thursday and it was fun. I mean, not as fun as eating cake, but still. So maybe I’ll bake something else. Or make some ice cream. Or some popsicles.
  • My living space is in desperate need of some attention. A rainy day could be just what I need to power through some sorting, tidying, cleaning, and recycling.
  • But let’s be honest, it’s also going to include some knitting, some Tour de France watching, and some reading.
  • Sunday morning will definitely include a trip to the farmers market. I’m looking forward to a smoothie bowl (unless it’s watermelon this week, in which case I’ll pass) and to dumping my compost bin.
  • If I’m feeling adventurous this weekend, I might go in search of the two things Rudi and I have agreed we’d like to buy — interesting frames for some of the artwork we’ve acquired this year and bigger bowls for eating salads. I have my eye on the latter, but am thinking I need to hit some second-hand shops to find the former.
  • The Mets and the Yankees are playing each other this weekend. We caught the tail end of tonight’s game on my phone as we walked home from the park, and I’d love to see some more of the matchup.

How about you? What are you hoping to do this weekend?
