niggling

Do you ever have the feeling you’re forgetting to do something really important? I’ve had that sensation for a week now and I just can’t get past the idea that suddenly August is going to arrive and I’ll be furious with myself…

A friend’s anniversary is this week and another’s birthday. Taxes were due earlier in the month, and I’ve paid all my bills. (doublechecks notes — yup, paid them all…) Summer is a third’ish over, but what is time even?

Is there a work deadline? I mean, there’s always a work deadline, usually behind me. We have several events next month — a virtual work retreat, a virtual summit, a virtual conference — but right now none of those have any deadlines that require work from me…

August 1st was the random due date all the library books were assigned back in March. Could it be as simple as that?

I just don’t know. But at this point, I kind of just want August 1st to arrive so I know what I forgot.

planning

How is it the last weekend of July already? Wasn’t it just March?

This workweek was so much better than last week in terms of stress and work-life balance, but I still seem to be fighting off exhaustion. So I’m going to try to take this weekend easy again:

  • Buy cherries. Sours are already gone and I hear this is the last weekend for sweets.
  • Find quarters. Did you know we’re having a nationwide coin shortage? So many businesses had already switched to a cash-free model during the pandemic and now I’m having a really hard time finding places where I can get quarters for laundry. A friend reminded me the Metro machines used to be a reliable source, so I’m going to give that a shot. I welcome any other ideas you may have, commenters.
  • Do some online shopping. Maybe check out. Maybe just browser window shop.
  • Finish my Smock Madness socks.
  • Listen to baseball.
  • Read.
  • Make more ice cream. Maybe chocolate chip this time.
  • Plant some more potatoes and beans. (I found another bag with sprouting potatoes in it when we cleaned the kitchen.)
  • Send some mail.
  • Back up my phone. (I don’t think I’ve done that this year.)
  • Catch up on sleep.

What are you hoping your weekend will include?

audiobook sampling
posted by soe 1:09 am

I finished an audiobook last night, which means a new one was started while I was doing the dishes tonight. I’ve ended up with too many out at once, all of which expire in less than a week. I decided I’d start several of them to get a sense of which ones I like enough to want to keep going with, rather than either letting them expire untried or just requesting them again in the hopes of more opportune timing.

Tonight’s audiobook sample came from Field Notes on Love by Jennifer E. Smith, who specializes in y.a. romances told from both perspectives.

Also checked out to me in audio format are The Bride Test by Helen Hoang (which had reached a cringey moment the last time I had it out), Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman (which Rudi and I are listening to intermittently after having enjoyed the small screen adaptation), Get a Life, Chloe Brown by Talia Hibbert (a British romance I was enjoying that expired before I could listen to the last several chapters), How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi (which I should probably just give up on in audio format in favor of print, since that tends to be my preferred way of processing non-memoir nonfiction), and The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi (which will be what I sample during tomorrow night’s chores).

What are you listening to these days?

self-care weekend
posted by soe 1:24 am

It was a stressful workweek, with lots of deadlines and quick turnarounds and making sure the people who work for me were doing a better job with self-care than my boss and I were doing. But there is no way through such weeks but through…

And we did get through it and the organization didn’t burn to the ground and people did herculean amounts of work with my thanks and we all made it to Friday night relatively unscathed. Rudi and I toasted five o’clock with Filipino doughnuts that I’d ridden my bike through the midday heat to pick up. (Thank you, past me for ordering them!)

I marked the start of the weekend by picking up some holds from the library. Rudi and I went to the garden, sighed over the tomatoes that had disappeared from our plot (and the one that didn’t, but that now has a very large bite gone from it). We picked a foot-long cucumber and gave everything a good dousing.

We ate pizza and ice cream for dinner and watched episodes of The Librarians and Parks and Recreation.

Since I didn’t do a good job of it during the week, I’m going to continue this evening’s focus on self-care through the weekend. I’ll attempt to refind my living room, which is currently buried under my kitchen — which admittedly looks amazingly spacious with only the bare minimum in it from the fridge move yesterday.

I’ll order some more masks in fun designs and cute motifs, because these are the new universal fashion accessories and I’ve had to hand wash mine twice this week. I’ll go outside in the evening when it’s cooler and sit in the park. And maybe I will give making pasta a shot (in the kitchen, not in the park). It was on my list of things to work on while social distancing way back in March — a list that looks so painfully naive and optimistic all these months later.

But whatever I do, I will not be doing work.

mid-july weekending

Capreses

Most importantly, I slept in both mornings and also took a nap this afternoon after I got back from the farmers market.

The weekend included two evenings of digging in the garden — one to put in potatoes and the other to add beans. The herb section of the garden has gotten a little overrun in the last month, so I’ll need to do a certain amount of yanking in the next week to bring that back under control. But in digging up the potato bed, I did come across two small potatoes and pulled out four onions and the smaller of the two bronze fennels. And I harvested basil to top our capreses tonight.

We chatted with friends here in town, in the other Washington, in Georgia (the state), and London. It was nice to catch up.

We did grocery shopping and farmers market shopping. I have lettuce for salads and dish soap for salad plates.

I returned three items to the library and picked up one more, which I started to read tonight. It didn’t immediately hook me, so I’ll give it another try later in the week.

I ordered fancy Filipino doughnuts from a new bakery that I’ll pick up Friday afternoon as a reward for getting through this next week, which looks to be a challenging one at my couch office (there are two grants to write, 700 pages to test (not just by me) on a relaunched website, and a virtual gala to attend, in addition to my normal crushing amount of work).

Daiquiris and baked goods will have to wait until later in the week, perhaps as a reward for doing my taxes (where did I put those documents?) or perhaps just for continuing to get up each day. (I make my daiquiris without rum, so I could totally have one at 9 in the morning, right?)

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go finish turning my sock heel and then turn in.
