weekend plans
posted by soe 1:35 am

It’s supposed to be a beautiful weekend here. After a scorcher of a week, we need it. I’m going to try to soak up as much of it as I can. Here’s what I hope it includes:

  • Eat outside.
  • Watch some bike racing.
  • Start a new knitting project. (Nope, still no idea which it’ll be. Game time decision!)
  • Stalk Wonder Woman. (They’re filming the second movie in the series here in D.C. This weekend it’s downtown near the White House. They did some filming last month outside the Watergate, where my friend Sarah works and they eventually had to send a P.A. up to ask them to stop watching from the window, since they were in the shot.)
  • Pull out my pea vines. They were looking done for when I was at the garden on Wednesday, but there were a few more pods I wanted to give a shot to.)
  • Admire Cezanne. (There’s a retrospective of his work at the National Gallery of Art that I just heard about that ends on Sunday. Apparently I haven’t been paying attention to the art scene. But this requires heading to a Smithsonian on a summer weekend on a closing weekend, two things I try to avoid like a bad cold, so I might decide looking at his Wikipedia page is just as good…)
  • Do laundry.
  • Bake. (I pitted a couple quarts of cherries mid-week, but it was just too hot to turn on the oven.)
  • Make daiquiris. (I have a lot of whole strawberries in my freezer right now.)
  • Watch the sun set from the park.

How about you? What do you have on tap for the weekend?

First Blueberry Picking of the Year

As you can see, I did make it out the farm to pick blueberries. The bushes were laden, so that bucket took just over an hour to fill, which I appreciated. Saturday’s rain held off until I was done picking and even then it was just sprinkles (and a rainbow) until I was back home.

I would tell you more about my weekend, but I just spent more than two hours fitting cherries into the fridge from this morning’s farmers market (no fava beans, alas!) and cutting up the last of the strawberries, so all I want to do at this point is go to bed.

More tomorrow!

penultimate june weekend plans

Another D.C. weekend, another rainy forecast. But two weekends ago the predicted rain only materialized in the middle of the night, so I’m not going to let it get in the way of my planning…

Here are some of the things I’m hoping to do this weekend:

  • Celebrate Midsummer: Three European embassies will be holding a Baltic Midsummer Festival at Dupont Circle tomorrow afternoon. Later, three of the Smithsonian museums will be staying open late to celebrate the solstice.
  • Catch a play: One of the local amateur theater troupes has been staying Twelfth Night, and I think tomorrow is the final performance.
  • Pick blueberries.
  • Finish a sock.
  • Read a book.
  • Visit the library: The haul I showed you the other day was only half of what I had on hold, but rainy weather made me decide to carry home only half in order to keep them dry. I also have the first of my summer reading program prizes to pick up.
  • Plant tomatoes in the garden: There are fifteen or so growing on my windowsill at work and the tallest is over a foot tall. Time to get them outside.
  • Attend an arts festival: A new D.C. arts festival, By the People, has been going on since Thursday and Sunday will be the final day to check out installations.
  • Shop at the farmers market: I’m really hoping for fava beans, but that may not be.
  • Call a friend: Tomorrow is my friend Rebecca’s birthday.
  • Cut up strawberries: I still have several pints in the fridge that should be cut up and turned into a shortcake.
  • Clean the microwave: Our microwave is on a shelf that puts it at knee-level, which means we usually aren’t looking inside. But I did, and it needs washing.

What are you hoping to do this weekend?

Alliums are such pretty, improbable flowers.
