happy april!
posted by soe 1:37 am

I wish you all a joyful fourth month of the year. In D.C., this month will be filled with cherry blossoms and warmer days, our first baseball games and the first garden clean-up of the year, bike rides and violets. But first we have to get home from Connecticut, where they’re expecting a couple inches of snow tomorrow morning. I’m not amused.

I hope everyone had a nice Easter. We ate a tasty supper, followed by lemon black-bottom pie and Jesus Christ Superstar live on tv.

happy easter!

To those who celebrate, let me wish you a Happy Easter. And while I’m locked out of Rudi’s laptop, which means I can’t embed things from YouTube and Flickr, I still wanted to point you to this classic Easter special I remember fondly from when I was a kid. I’ll be celebrating the day with my folks & some family friends and hope you’re also with those you love, at least in spirit.

St. Patrick's Day Cocoa

I did not get to the mopping, nor to the movies, this weekend. But it was a really nice one, nonetheless.

I did the library shuffle, trading materials I’d previously borrowed for new ones at two branches.

I made it to the French pastry shop where the Hawaiian-style malasada (Portuguese doughnuts) will be popping up on weekends and brought home four for us to sample — jam-filled, lemon curd-filled, ube- (purple yam) glazed with coconut, and pandan- (screwpine) cream-filled. We were excited to finally get to try them.

Winter Gardening, Week 3

I stopped at the garden and turned soil in another section of my plot and planted seeds for lettuce and other greens.

I did some grocery shopping, drank tea at a cafe, and blocked my shawl (which requires going into the office after hours).

Shawl Blocking

We watched Despicable Me 3, which was cute, but not as good as the original.

Rudi had his first weekend day off since December, which was awesome. We went to the farmers market and then headed out to Savage, Maryland, where there was a local yarn market going on. It’s been a few years since I’ve been able to go, and I came home with a few skeins of yarn to mark the occasion, including a skein of blue to make a cherry blossom hat. (Now I just need to hit the bead store to buy the beads I’ll need.)

All in all a busy, but relaxing weekend! How was yours?

Rock Creek -- Still Winter

I thought since I keep posting pictures of green things growing that those of you in places still covered in inches and inches of snow might appreciate knowing that most of D.C. still looks like Rock Creek Park, where it’s clearly still winter.

But spring arrives this coming week, so I’ll leave you with this thought:

Cherry Blossoms

st. patrick’s day weekend to-do list
posted by soe 12:52 am

Magnolias Downtown

I have lots of things I’d like this weekend to include. Here are some of them, in no particular order:

  • Paint my nails.
  • Finish A Gentleman in Moscow.
  • Block a shawl, as well as the sleeve of my sweater so I can figure out if I can keep knitting it as is.
  • Check out a new pop-up doughnut shop.
  • Attend a local yarn festival.
  • Plant some lettuce and other greens’ seeds.
  • Watch Love, Simon.
  • Pick up my holds at the library (which include Strange the Dreamer, so thank goodness I returned it last weekend).
  • Wash my handknits (and some other laundry).
  • Bake Irish soda bread (without raisins because yuck).
  • Buy flowers (and milk) at the farmers market.
  • Mop the kitchen floor.

How about you? What are you hoping to do this weekend?
