found, festive, and fall bounty

Peppers

We still haven’t sorted out our WiFi woes, so I figured I should post this before I left the office so I don’t have to thumb type another post. (Actually the typing is fine. It’s the photo placement that’s a pain going over 4G, as anyone who saw the original image placement in last night’s post surely realized.)

Anyway, here are three beautiful things from my past week:

1. My misplaced wallet turned out to have been carefully hidden away in the pocket of my bag. (I didn’t panic because my sunglasses were also AWOL, so I’d assumed they were partying together at work after hours, but it’s still nice to be reunited and to know my credit cards weren’t out on a spending spree.)

2. I have Halloween-themed lights up both at work and at home. (There may also have been some Halloween candy purchased.)

3. My Sunday market basket included two ginormous stalks of broccoli, a massive bunch of kale, and four petite butternut squash (not quite honey nut size, but as close as I could find). (It also included a bag of Roma tomatoes, which I’m hoping will turn themselves into a delicious soup.)

How about you? What’s been beautiful in your world lately?

Three beautiful things from my past week:

Bouquet from the Vet

1. The vet’s office sent us a lovely bouquet this week in memory of Posey.

Maple Leaves

Fall Leaves

2. Despite missing my original flight (decidedly not beautiful), I had a really nice visit to Connecticut over the weekend. We celebrated Dad’s 75th birthday, and I got to hang out with my folks, enjoy late summer flowers and early autumn color, catch up on sleep, and spend time with Karen hiking, chatting, and consider vocabulary. I also got to eat some of my favorite foods, including homemade scones and apple pie, pizza, doughnuts, and chicken divan.

3. As hard as it is to leave everyone in Connecticut, it was nice to return to Rudi and the cats and the comforts of being home.

excursion, burmese drinks, and new venture

Moonrise

If it’s Thursday, it’s time for three beautiful things from my past week:

1. Sarah and I spent Sunday afternoon out in the Virginia countryside. We picked apples, ate cider doughnuts, and explored a cute, historic downtown.

Mmmm… Doughnuts…

2. Julia and I spent Saturday afternoon at Union Market. We checked out an artisan fair, and while the Hawaiian doughnut shop was closed (must get there earlier next time), we did get to try faloodas, a type of Burmese dessert drink. It’s made with flavored jellies (kind of like mini jello squares; she went with coffee, I with pomegranate), rose water, basil seeds, rice balls, milk, and ice cream — and is very rich and very tasty.

3. Rudi has a new job working for one of the dockless bikeshare systems (shareable bicycles that can be left pretty much anywhere around the city, rather than needing to be returned to a specific place) that launched in D.C. in September. It’s a move into a field that he’s really excited about exploring, and I really couldn’t be happier for him.

How about you? What’s been beautiful in your world recently?

Three beautiful things from my past week:

UncensoredDC

1. I’ve found Halloween stickers, a missing knitting project, paperwork I’ve been hunting for, and The Handmaid’s Tale, one of the banned books the D.C. public library hides around town as part of its Uncensored D.C. celebration.

2. I painted my fingernails over the weekend in fall colors and did my toes during the week. I was hoping some seasonal colors would bring back the cooler weather, and the forecast suggests I was right. (I mean, sure, I had to wait a few days for it to take hold, but still…)

3. Twice this week, I’ve come home from evening volleyball games and immediately hopped into the shower. When I get out a few minutes later and put on pi’s, I just feel so cozy and relaxed.

fresh take, up a level, and kindness

Three beautiful things from the final week of summer:

Popping out to Say Cuckoo!

1. Tonight they showed The Sound of Music in Dupont Circle (it’s the park/traffic circle that gives our neighborhood its name, if you’ve never been here), and a nice-sized crowd showed up to watch. There seemed to be some teen boys in attendance who were very supportive of Maria, shouting, “You can do it!” when she gets intimidated by the Von Trapp’s estate and cheering enthusiastically when she & the Captain hook up. We applauded at the end of songs and whenever Nazis got their comeuppance or Austrians were told to hold strong against tyranny, giving the movie a far more political, and sadly relevant, feel than when I’ve seen it in the past.

Sunset from the Circle

2. I added a second night of volleyball to my schedule this week. (My brain thought there would be less overlap when I signed up, but it looks to be almost a month where I play twice a week.) The second team plays indoors and sometime after I enrolled, they switched it from a social league to a more competitive one, which made me a little nervous that my team would be a bunch of ultra-serious players who got cranky when we (read: I) screwed up. However, it seems at least half of us had jumped in before the league was re-designated, so it ended up being a pretty supportive group who were just there to play and have fun. I mean, granted, we were playing a team running plays in formations, while we were trying to get everyone on the same page of who was setting, but that was okay because we were enjoying ourselves. And while I was moaning over achy knees last night, this morning they were fine enough to run down the metro escalator, much to my relief.

Dahlias

3. Thank you everyone for your kind words after Posey’s death. It’s been a hard week, particularly when we go to bed and she’s not there to lie between us, but your good thoughts have helped to make it easier.

infection, taking to the streets, and baseball
posted by soe 1:52 am

It’s Thursday, which means I resurface from under the rock I’ve been dwelling under to tell you about three beautiful things from my past week:

Posey and Jeremiah, Chilling on the Sofa

1. After believing Posey to be at death’s door and taking her to the vet, we found out this morning that she has a really serious urinary tract infection and after some treatments should be just fine.

Apple Cider Press at the Petworth Street Festival

2. T’is the season for neighborhood festivals. We missed the one closest to us a couple weeks ago, but last weekend I made it to ones in Petworth and Adams Morgan, where I checked out local shops, restaurants, artisans, and nonprofits.

Adams Morgan Day Street Food

3. While my Mets have been playing abysmally this week (their scores against the Cubs suggest they were playing football, rather than baseball), the Nationals clinched the Eastern Division over the weekend. We had two last games to watch in person this week: yesterday, the Nationals lost, but tonight they won handily, with some exciting offensive plays to keep us paying attention.

Oh, and since Carole and Kat have changed the focus of their Thursday meme-along, my Three Beautiful Things now counts toward that. Head over to see what three things their other friends shared today.
