the ’80s
posted by soe 2:01 am

I’ve been thinking recently — probably as a result of singing along with a lot a cappella music recently — that I may need to put together a mix cd/playlist of fun ’80s tunes.

I’m leaning toward the ones that get you up and dancing around the living room — Madonna’s “Borderline” and Cindy Lauper’s “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” spring to mind — for an initial compilation. But if I come up with a sufficient number of ballads — the ’80s did have a great selection of power ballads, after all — I’m not above making a second set of songs.

Anyone have any favorites they think I should include?

I was coming to comment to include: We Built This City – Starship, and I Wanna Dance with Somebody – Whitney Houston. I decided to add them again because they are that good!
Some Fine Young Cannibals is definitely needed, Let’s Hear it For the Boy by Deniece Williams, Flashdance/Footloose soundtracks.

I was just thinking the other day how good that Whitney song was, I Want to Dance With Somebody was, as I remembered dancing at Jim’s, our university bar that had quarter night on M, T and Th nights.

Come on Eileen (Dexy’s Midnight Runners), The Safety Dance (Men without Hats), possibly Devo, You Spin Me ‘Round and also Brand New Lover (Dead or Alive), Don’t You Want Me (Human League), New Song (Howard Jones)…

I have millions more, depending on what you are looking for!

@DOD: I thought of We Built This City, but couldn’t think of who performed it. Thanks for that and for the other good suggestions.

@raidergirl3: Ooh! Good call with Deniece Williams. And I’m partial to “I Need a Hero” from Footloose.

@Debby: Fun choices! I don’t think I would have come up with any of those on my own!
