I read on Reya<\/a>‘s blog that the annual Bloggers’ (Silent) Poetry Reading is on again today. Reya began this tradition years ago with an in-person poetry reading and expanded it to become a worldwide phenomenon in 2006. The date was chosen to honor St. Brigid, poets, dairymaids, blacksmiths, healers, cattle, fugitives, Irish nuns, midwives, and new-born babies. Her feast is also used much like Groundhog’s Day, to remind you that winter will not last forever.<\/p>\n

The host of this year’s reading is Deborah<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Last year’s poem was Grace Paley’s “Here”<\/a> and the first year’s poems were “A Physics”<\/a> by Heather McHugh and “Ode to American English”<\/a> by Barbara Hamby.<\/p>\n

This year I offer you this poem on the sunny morning after a day filled with rain:<\/p>\n

Last Night the Rain Spoke to Me
\n        ~Mary Oliver<\/p>\n

Last night
\nthe rain
\nspoke to me
\nslowly, saying,<\/p>\n

what joy
\nto come falling
\nout of the brisk cloud,
\nto be happy again<\/p>\n

in a new way
\non the earth!
\nThat’s what it said
\nas it dropped,<\/p>\n

smelling of iron,
\nand vanished
\nlike a dream of the ocean
\ninto the branches<\/p>\n

and the grass below.
\nThen it was over.
\nThe sky cleared.
\nI was standing<\/p>\n

under a tree.
\nThe tree was a tree
\nwith happy leaves,
\nand I was myself,<\/p>\n

and there were stars in the sky
\nthat were also themselves
\nat the moment,
\nat which moment<\/p>\n

my right hand
\nwas holding my left hand
\nwhich was holding the tree
\nwhich was filled with stars<\/p>\n

and the soft rain —
\nimagine! imagine!
\nthe long and wondrous journeys
