This weekend marked the ninth annual Bloggers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 (Silent) Poetry Reading in honor of St. Brigid, patron saint of poetry. You can find links to other poems on the festival’s Facebook<\/a> page.<\/p>\n

I wanted a poem filled with fury, roaring against constraints, but couldn’t find any, or maybe I just didn’t look hard enough. Instead, I offer you up this instead, which is maybe what I needed even more:<\/p>\n

\nWhat’s in My Journal
\n   by William Stafford<\/p>\n

Odd things, like a button drawer. Mean
\nthings, fishhooks, barbs in your hand.
\nBut marbles too. A genius for being agreeable.
\nJunkyard crucifixes, voluptuous
\ndiscards. Space for knickknacks, and for
\nAlaska. Evidence to hang me, or to beatify.
\nClues that lead nowhere, that never connected
\nanyway. Deliberate obfuscation, the kind
\nthat takes genius. Chasms in character.
\nLoud omissions. Mornings that yawn above
\na new grave. Pages you know exist
\nbut you can’t find them. Someone’s terribly
\ninevitable life story, maybe mine.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

I love that.<\/p>\n
