A long time ago (in knitting time it was a hat, two mismatched socks, two washcloths, four mouse booties, and several unfinished objects ago) in a galaxy far, far away (Louisiana), Amanda of Clothesknit<\/a> had an idea. A good idea. A very good idea. Her idea, you ask? Why to start an exchange of sock yarn all around the world. And, thus, Yarn Aboard!<\/a> was born.<\/p>\n

\"Yarn<\/p>\n

I had never joined an exchange before. But I wanted to. And even though I originally thought I would have to knit socks for my secret pal, I still wanted in. Amanda patiently explained that I would not be required to knit for my pal but just to buy for her. Huzzah! thought I, that’s even better!<\/p>\n

So Amanda drew up two lists. She sent out a Drill box that Alison had mailed her from Massachusetts and Alison of the blue blog<\/a> sent out a Radio box that Carola of sheep and no city<\/a> had shipped her from Iceland.<\/p>\n

I promptly went out and bought yarn and needles for my pal. And then I sat down and waited for the box.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I knit<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I read<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I took<\/a> a few<\/a> trips<\/a>.<\/p>\n

I competed in the Olympics<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A box arrived<\/a> — but it wasn’t The Box.<\/p>\n

I waited a while longer.<\/p>\n

I visited<\/a> some sheep<\/a>.<\/p>\n

A knitting friend asked periodically if I’d gotten the box yet. No, I would tell her, I’m still waiting.<\/p>\n

But yesterday, hope sprung to life once again. There was a “sorry we missed you” doorhanger from a delivery company on the door addressed to me.<\/p>\n

“Do you think it could be the box?” asked Rudi.<\/p>\n

Maybe…<\/p>\n

Want to see what DHL delivered to my door? So did Jeremiah…<\/p>\n

\"The<\/p>\n

Why, it’s the Radio box from Lu at Maglia! in California<\/a>!<\/p>\n

“I thought it might be,” said Rudi. “I shook it like in that post<\/a> you read me.”<\/p>\n

I carefully opened the box (it has been around the world a couple of times after all!) and peeled back the tissue paper and bubble wrap.<\/p>\n

Look what was inside!<\/p>\n

Lu sent me some gorgeously luxurious yarn to make beautiful socks with!<\/p>\n

The center skein is Vesper Sock Yarn<\/a> in the Neopolitan colorway in merino. I’m pretty sure that if socks are worn in a colorway named after ice cream that you are almost obligated to eat some whenever you wear them.<\/p>\n

The other two skeins are Claudia Hand Painted Yarn in Red Wagon. This beautiful yarn, which is made in South Africa, really captures the sprite writes colors. Isn’t it beautiful?<\/p>\n

But, wait, there’s more!<\/p>\n

\"all<\/p>\n

Lu also sent me a great little strawberry journal, which is just the perfect size to throw in my work bag with my knitting project du jour so I can keep track of things on the go.<\/p>\n

She also included some stitch point protectors, so I won’t have a heart attack from dropped stitches when one project gets put aside (or stuffed into a random bag or basket) and I absent-mindedly pick it up again later.<\/p>\n

Finally, Lu also included treats for the other senses: Knitting Girl green apple mints and two kinds of incense — one to stimulate and one to mellow. And she included a great seashore card.<\/p>\n

I’ll be filling the box back up this weekend and sending it off to its next recipient. So if you think it might be headed your way, alert your mail carrier and check your box in the middle of next week.<\/p>\n
