{"id":4045,"date":"2012-04-29T22:47:06","date_gmt":"2012-04-30T03:47:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.spritewrites.net\/?p=4045"},"modified":"2012-04-29T22:49:29","modified_gmt":"2012-04-30T03:49:29","slug":"late-april-garden-report","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.spritewrites.net\/?p=4045","title":{"rendered":"late april garden report"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>We headed down to the garden this afternoon to plant see how our plants were doing.<\/p>\n<p>We planted four plants I bought this morning at the farmers market (three tomatoes and a sweet pepper), as well as some seeds (lettuces, spinach, beans, and two types of squash). We also set some seeds aside for fall gardening, some to try growing from seed in my window at work (cucumber seeds and microgreens), and some to plant in the next few weeks (quinoa, more beans, and some herbs).<\/p>\n<p>Lots of things were blooming:<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spriteshoots\/6980816882\/\" title=\"Spring Onion Bloom by kkfea, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7203\/6980816882_0990e43435.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Spring Onion Bloom\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>Our chives from last year have turned into full-fledged spring onions this year and are growing these gigantic alien-like flower heads.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spriteshoots\/7126907259\/\" title=\"Tomato Flowers by kkfea, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7078\/7126907259_34f3df32bf.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Tomato Flowers\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>I like to cheat by buying tomato plants that have tiny buds on them. This one was planted two weeks ago and is flourishing. It&#8217;s a low-light tomato, so it&#8217;s toward the back of the garden.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spriteshoots\/7126912281\/\" title=\"Sage Blossom by kkfea, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7095\/7126912281_5ea9fee4d6.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Sage Blossom\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The sage is covered with purple flowers, even after Rudi hacked half of it off a few weeks back.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spriteshoots\/6980811672\/\" title=\"Potato Bed by kkfea, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7182\/6980811672_843b66704a.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"Potato Bed\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The potatoes I planted two weeks ago were up above the ground. I added three types of beans to the bed &#8212; edamame, purple, and yellow.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spriteshoots\/7126909705\/\" title=\"Hacked Chard by kkfea, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm9.staticflickr.com\/8161\/7126909705_ed9ed34e1a.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" alt=\"Hacked Chard\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>The chard had gone a little crazy in our two-week absence from the garden and had reached knee level, so Rudi cut off a bag&#8217;s worth of chard as this week&#8217;s harvest (along with a spring onion). This is what&#8217;s left from the front bed.<\/p>\n<p><center><a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/spriteshoots\/6980814814\/\" title=\"Green Strawberry by kkfea, on Flickr\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/farm8.staticflickr.com\/7115\/6980814814_c86088bc4e.jpg\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" alt=\"Green Strawberry\"><\/a><\/center><\/p>\n<p>We will have an excellent strawberry crop, which is comforting given how much of our plot we&#8217;ve given over to them.
