WETA, one of our three local PBS stations, has gotten into the lovely habit of showing old movies on Saturday nights. This week we got Houseboat<\/em>, starring Cary Grant and Sophia Loren. The movie, which I had seen the second half of many years ago, takes place in Washington, D.C., and Northern Virginia and features a great scene of a floating band shell on the Potomac and fancily-dressed concert-goers sitting on the Watergate Steps.<\/p>\n

Houseboat<\/em> was my first exposure to Loren, despite the fact that in my final semester of grad school, I took a class on women in film (1910-1960). In it, I was introduced to a number of great films and wonderful actors, but Loren seems to have appeared in films mostly outside the date scope of the class.<\/p>\n

This made me curious: what other great film stars have I missed out on?<\/p>\n

I consulted the AFI’s list of 50 top stars<\/a> and made notations of who was missing: Henry Fonda, James Cagney, Charlie Chaplin, John Wayne, Kirk Douglas, James Dean, Robert Mitchum, William Holden, Rita Hayworth, and Ava Gardner. They’ve all eluded my list.<\/p>\n

The annotated list of the 50 best film stars (with the movies I’ve seen them in in parentheses) follows:<\/p>\n

MEN<\/strong><\/p>\n

    \n
  1. Humphrey Bogart (Maltese Falcon<\/em> and Casablanca<\/em>)<\/li>\n
  2. Cary Grant (many, many including The Bishop’s Wife<\/em>, To Catch a Thief<\/em>, Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House<\/em>, and His Girl Friday<\/em>) <\/li>\n

    Cary is one of my favorites — and clearly the reason that tall, dark, and handsome became the standard requirements for the fantasy man. He is good in so many things, and his comedic side is undervalued.<\/p>\n

  3. James Stewart (Harvey<\/em>, The Philadelphia Story<\/em>, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington<\/em>, It’s a Wonderful Life<\/em>, and After the Thin Man<\/em>)\n<\/li>\n

    Jimmy is one of those actors who I adore in everything I’ve seen him in. I should definitely watch more of his movies. And if your only exposure to him is at Christmas every year, so should you.<\/p>\n

  4. Marlon Brando (On the Waterfront<\/em> and Julius Caesar<\/em>)\n<\/li>\n
  5. Fred Astaire (Holiday Inn<\/em>, Easter Parade<\/em>, Funny Face<\/em>, and several Rankin-Bass holiday productions)\n<\/li>\n
  6. Henry Fonda\n<\/li>\n
  7. Clark Gable \t(Gone with the Wind<\/em> and It Happened One Night<\/em>)\n<\/li>\n

    If you’ve only seen him as Rhett, you should definitely see It Happened One Night<\/em>.<\/p>\n

  8. James Cagney\n<\/li>\n
  9. Spencer Tracy (Boys Town<\/em>, State of the Union<\/em>, Pat and Mike<\/em>, Desk Set<\/em>, Inherit the Wind<\/em>, Adam’s Rib<\/em>, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner<\/em>, and It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World<\/em>)\n

    Spencer gets the benefit of my being a huge Kate Hepburn fan. But he is excellent in movies that don’t star her, as well.<\/p>\n<\/li>\n

  21. Buster Keaton (It’s a Mad Mad Mad Mad World<\/em>, Steamboat Bill, Jr.<\/em>, and Beach Blanket Bingo<\/em>)\n<\/li>\n

    When I first saw the Beach Blanket<\/em> movies after seeing a Buster Keaton movie, I immediately made the comparison between the two. Little did I realize at the time that that horny old man running around in the background was<\/strong> Keaton!<\/p>\n

  22. Sidney Poitier (Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner<\/em>)\n<\/li>\n
  23. Robert Mitchum\n<\/li>\n
  24. Edward G. Robinson \t(Double Indemnity<\/em>)\n<\/li>\n
  25. William Holden\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    WOMEN<\/strong><\/p>\n

    1. Katharine Hepburn (many, many, including Desk Set<\/em>, Adam’s Rib<\/em>, Guess Who’s Coming to Dinner<\/em>, Bringing Up Baby<\/em>, Stage Door<\/em>, and The Philadelphia Story<\/em>) <\/li>\n

      I love Kate. She is incredible in everything she does. Just incredible.<\/p>\n

    2. Bette Davis (All About Eve<\/em>, Pocketful of Miracles<\/em>, and Now, Voyager<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    3. Audrey Hepburn (Breakfast at Tiffany’s<\/em>, Funny Face<\/em>, Roman Holiday<\/em>, and Charade<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    4. Ingrid Bergman (Casablanca <\/em>and The Bell’s of St. Mary’s<\/em>)<\/li>\n

      Sure Casablanca <\/em>is her piece de resistance<\/em>, but The Bells of St. Mary’s <\/em>holds a special place in my heart. In the movie, Bergman plays a nun up against Bing Crosby’s Father “Dial ‘O’ for” O’Malley in a quest to save a parish, a school, and a church.<\/p>\n

    5. Greta Garbo (Camille <\/em>and Ninotchka<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    6. Marilyn Monroe (Some Like It Hot<\/em>, Gentlemen Prefer Blondes<\/em>, All About Eve<\/em>, Seven Year Itch<\/em>, and How to Marry a Millionaire<\/em>)<\/li>\n

      I admit that prior to seeing a Monroe movie, I guessed her to be little more than a pin-up. But the woman could act and had a great sense of comedic timing.<\/p>\n

    7. Elizabeth Taylor (Cat on a Hot Tin Roof<\/em>, Little Women<\/em>, and National Velvet<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    8. Judy Garland (The Wizard of Oz<\/em>, Easter Parade<\/em>, Meet Me in St. Louis<\/em>, Pigskin Parade<\/em>, Babes in Arms<\/em>, and Life Begins for Andy Hardy<\/em>)<\/li>\n

      Judy has long been a favorite — and I’ve come to enjoy much of what she’s starred in.<\/p>\n

    9. Marlene Dietrich (Shanghai Express<\/em> and Blonde Venus<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    10. Joan Crawford (Mildred Pierce <\/em>and The Women<\/em>)<\/li>\n

      If you haven’t seen The Women<\/em>, run out and rent it. A fantastic ensemble cast!<\/p>\n

    11. Barbara Stanwyck (Double Indemnity<\/em>, television’s The Big Valley<\/em>, Christmas in Connecticut<\/em>, and Stella Dallas<\/em>)<\/li>\n

      This little woman managed to star in some big movies. Christmas in Connecticut<\/em> is a sentimental favorite.<\/p>\n

    12. Claudette Colbert (It Happened One Night<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    13. Grace Kelly (To Catch a Thief<\/em>, High Society<\/em> and High Noon<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    14. Ginger Rogers (Stage Door<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    15. Mae West (She Done Him Wrong<\/em> and I’m No Angel<\/em>)<\/li>\n

      I hadn’t heard of Mae West before taking my film studies class, and that’s a real shame. She helps us to realize that film before the film code was actually cutting edge and that our grandmothers could have been awfully bawdy!<\/p>\n

    16. Vivien Leigh (Gone with the Wind<\/em>)<\/li>\n
    17. Lillian Gish (Way Down East<\/em>)<\/li>\n

      Watch it for the ice floe scene if for no other reason!<\/p>\n

    18. Shirley Temple (Heidi <\/em>and The Little Princess<\/em>)<\/li>\n

    20. Lauren Bacall (How to Marry a Millionaire<\/em> and The Mirror Has Two Faces<\/em>)<\/li>\n

    23. Carole Lombard (My Man Godfrey<\/em>)<\/li>\n

      Comedic genius! William Powell is also great in this movie, although not as good as his run with Myrna Loy in The Thin Man<\/em> series.<\/p>\n
