Today is the sixth annual Bloggers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 (Silent) Poetry Reading<\/a> in honor of St. Brigid, patron saint of poetry. <\/p>\n

Here is my contribution:<\/p>\n

\nThe Yellow Slicker<\/strong>
\n     by Stuart Dischell<\/p>\n

On this fourth day in a row of rain
\nThere is a sameness to the streets broken only by the odd
\nBrightly painted house—the way those who pass by
\nIn tan or black trench coats look back at the girl
\nWearing a yellow slicker. The yellow slicker,
\nA gift from her aunt who knew London would be wet,
\nHaving lived there herself just after The War,
\nThe Europe she had known transformed to a state
\nOf the mind, no longer Central but Eastern, far away,
\nBombed-out, depopulated, at least of her kind.<\/p>\n

But for a girl of nineteen with American thoughts,
\nTraveler’s cheques, a boy at home, a university
\nAddress, the decline of the West compels less
\nThan each step she takes through the London rain.
\nEven these British so accustomed to their weather
\nAdmire the girl in the yellow slicker, as if she
\nWith her uncovered streaming blond hair might shine
\nAs the only sun they will see all week. Now,
\nThat’s the kind of history she likes to hear.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
