Today is the 5th annual Bloggers’ (Silent) Poetry Reading<\/a> in honor of St. Brigid, patron saint of poetry. <\/p>\n

This year’s selection so blew me away when it first arrived in my email that I read it twice, meditated on it all day, and then read it aloud to Rudi (who just loves that kind of thing, let me tell you).<\/p>\n

\nA Capital Trip<\/strong>

We went for salmon,
\nme and him,
\nout past the last singing buoy,
\non a choppy sea,
\nhis wife aboard, too,
\nof course; as crew,
\nhelpmeet, her feet
\nin high sturdy boots,
\nthick wool over all the rest.
\nI had on my flowery dress,
\nand like to froze
\ntill he gave me his coat,
\nhis big cozy jacket
\nright off his back,
\nwhen the wind whipped up
\nto a real squall
\nand rain fell hard
\non the slippery deck,
\nrinsing my dainty hands.
\nWe went for salmon,
\ncame home with none,
\nno fish in the hold,
\nno wife in woolens,
\na successful trip, nevertheless,
\nall told.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Oh my god. It’s just absolutely perfect in what it sets out to do and is such an amazing example of how poetry is capable of condensing a long story into 25 short, but powerful lines.<\/p>\n
