Poke about the web a bit and you can’t help but notice an abundance of poetry every February 2. It’s not because rodents are terribly fond of a bit of poesy, but merely because it marks the annual Bloggers\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 (Silent) Poetry Reading. The event honors Brigid (or Brigit or Bridhe), Celtic goddess and Catholic saint of poets, dairymaids, blacksmiths, healers, cattle, fugitives, Irish nuns, midwives, and new-born babies. It was her celebration marking the impregnation of the ewes that Christians co-opted to become Candlemas (which, ultimately, was celebrated by German immigrants in Pennsylvania as Groundhog Day).<\/p>\n

I offer you this year a poem by John Frederick Nims because I would love for something similar to be said of me. I found it in my freshman English textbook, bookmarked by a note from my college roommate, wishing me a happy 21st birthday:<\/p>\n

Love Poem<\/strong>
\n    ~John Frederick Nims<\/em><\/p>\n

My clumsiest dear, whose hands shipwreck vases,
\nAt whose quick touch all glasses chip and ring,
\nWhose palms are bulls in china, burs in linen,
\nAnd have no cunning with any soft thing<\/p>\n

Except all ill-at-ease fidgeting people:
\nThe refugee uncertain at the door
\nYou make at home; deftly you steady
\nThe drunk clambering on his undulant floor.<\/p>\n

Unpredictable dear, the taxi drivers’ terror,
\nShrinking from far headlights pale as a dime
\nYet leaping before red apoplectic streetcars —
\nMisfit in any space. And never on time.<\/p>\n

A wrench in clocks and the solar system. Only
\nWith words and people and love you move at ease.
\nIn traffic of wit expertly manoeuvre
\nAnd keep us, all devotion, at your knees.<\/p>\n

Forgetting your coffee spreading on our flannel,
\nYour lipstick grinning on our coat,
\nSo gayly in love’s unbreakable heaven
\nOur souls on glory of spilt bourbon float.<\/p>\n

Be with me, darling, early and late. Smash glasses —
\nI will study wry music for your sake.
\nFor should your hands drop white and empty
\nAll the toys of the world would break.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n
