sweet bread, old friend, and join us

Three beautiful things from my past week:

1. Cherry chocolate bread from the baker at the farmers market.

2. I spent Friday evening with a dear friend from college who lives on the other side of the country. We took a walk and celebrated our birthday early, I got to see both his daughters and his wife, and he drove me to the airport.

3. I was feeling a little sorry for myself after my Monday volleyball game, when no one wanted to go out afterwards. I stopped by the local fancy grocery store/bar on my walk home, not because I needed anything, but mostly as something to do before going home, and my friend (and teammate) came running in to invite me to join her, her husband, and her dog on the patio for a drink. (The volleyball bar doesn’t allow dogs, and it was an especially mild evening.)

How about you? What’s been beautiful in your world lately?

1. Wandering around Bethlehem, PA, on a day off from coaching was wonderful. There are so many stories in the architecture, in the people, in the terrain. It’s a city that is bringing itself back from economic ruin in a truly organic and inviting way.

2. Talking with the owner of Sal’s Brick Oven Pizza in Bethlehem was a real treat. She loves the community she’s built around her pizzeria that sits at the boundary of Lehigh University, and while she sees the end of her time with the restaurant in the near future, she’s soaking it all in every day.

3. Talking with a Menonite man as we were stopped at the same intersection in a town north of Bethlehem the other day, remarking of how unseasonably warm it is and talking about safety on the roads. We agreed that things need to be safer for all, and he was happy that a driver was willing to engage in civil conversation about these things.

1. I had friends come over to help me make a duct tape dummy of myself to send off to a fursuit maker, so we’re only a couple more months away from me getting to dress up as a silly fox. The maker said the DTD we sent was the best she’d ever gotten.

2. After some scary vet experiences last week and 2x a day medicine hell with our new kitty, his recheck today was fantastic. Also, someone anonymously donated to the vet clinic to help cover the cost of his bills, which is amazing and wonderful of them and I wish I knew how to thank them.

3. My art has gotten better with practice every day, and people are even willing to commission me to draw their characters now, Still, as great as that feels, the best feeling is the joy from surprising someone with unexpected gift art of their character.
