ten movies
posted by soe 11:58 pm

Ten current or upcoming movies I’m excited to see:

  • The Queen
  • History Boys
  • Catch and Release
  • Night at the Museum
  • Because I Said So
  • Music and Lyrics
  • Stomp the Yard
  • Live and Become
  • Freedom Writers
  • Bobby

Anybody seen any of these yet? Or have anything else they’d recommend seeing?

go, courant!

I’m proud of the Hartford Courant for penning the Jan. 21 editorial, “Revisit Same-Sex Marriage.”

I think the modern, prevailing attitude amongst younger generations is one of inclusion. I hope that state legislatures see it as a postive move forward sooner rather than later and make marriage a legal institution for everyone.

today’s comments are brought to you by…

I would just like to say that, as a WordPress blog user, I absolutely adore Akismet. In the last 24 hours, my Akismet comment spam filter has caught 1,114 spam comments here at spritewrites.

I moderate comments to prevent spammers from getting free airtime. This means that every time someone leaves a comment on the blog, I get an email.

Before Rudi found and installed Akismet on the blog, spam comments got emailed to me, too. Can you imagine if I had to sort through 1,000+ emails a day? Essentially, they’d shut down commenting on the blog because I’d have to close down the discussion portion in order to run the rest of my life.

If you’re a WordPress user and would like to cut down on the amount of comment spam you see, I’d suggest taking a serious look at Akismet. I mean, it’s free. How can you beat that?

We now return you to your regularly scheduled program.

What are you planning to do this weekend?

I’m hoping to:

  • Sleep
  • Open a Flickr account
  • Wind up some yarn to start some new projects
  • Mail off the last of the Christmas packages
  • Bake
  • Read the final act of King Lear
  • Knit during a three-hour meeting tomorrow afternoon
  • Watch a movie or two
  • Finish up the laundry
  • Wash the kitchen floor
  • Continue the sock yarn inventory I’m working on
  • Play in the snow
  • Take down the Christmas tree

even later, snowless drops, and transportation
posted by soe 12:13 pm

How did it get to be Thursday already? Three beautiful things from the last week:

1. Even though I was running ridiculously, laughably late yesterday, I decided to walk to work anyway — which takes me twice as long as hopping on the Metro. It was the first day in a week the sun had deigned to come out from behind the clouds, and I just knew clear blue skies couldn’t last. I got to work rosy-cheeked and filled with energy. Since today is slate gray, I definitely made the right decision.

2. Snow drops, which generally serve as a harbinger of the end of winter, have been sighted down the street from the Burrow. I can’t endorse the heat spell we’ve experienced of late, but I find it hard not to love flowers, no matter when they turn up.

3. I’ve been reading a great book lately, the sort that demands you simultaneously slow down to savor the words and speed up to find out what’s going to happen next. The sort of book that was written with readers in mind. The sort of book that lifts you out of your life and delivers you to where the story is taking place. Why aren’t there more books like that?
